I originally recommended The Hunger Games to a good friend of mine a few weeks ago, who in return recommended it to her boyfriend and then to our boss (we all work together). To see such a great book being spread so quickly is amazing, and I was fortunate enough to have been recommended the book by a professor at Marywood University. It had not yet dawned on me that Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is quickly becoming the next “big thing” to read. With a movie coming out in 2011, and Hot Topic selling The Hunger Games T-shirt I feel the book is quickly becoming a part of the mass-media. Anyone who has been reading The Hunger Games knows what an amazing book it is and cannot wait for the final book in the trilogy, Mockingjay. With the books becoming such a huge hit, for the first time ever I’m finding myself becoming very defensive about who reads it. I’ve been there with Katniss throughout the games, the rebellion against the Capital, as well as the love triangle between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale. Don’t get me wrong I love recommending a good book and watch it get passed along throughout friends and co-workers to enjoy the same adventure as I have. My fear with the Hunger Games series becoming such a huge hit is that I don’t want to see it becoming a “twilight craze”. Young screaming fans clutching an unread book at the movie theatre makes my hair stand on edge. I’m thrilled that some people have not read the Twilight series because personally I don’t feel they are written very well, but that is beside the point. The way Suzanne Collins writes is truly a work of art that engages the reader’s senses. She is full of imagery in her settings, characters we can all love, and a witty style with her words. I know eventually I will get over my jealousy and hatred for the mass-media and take part in buying The Hunger Games T-shirt, attending the midnight movie, and enjoy Suzanne Collins great success. Until that time I will remain stubborn, but still continue recommending The Hunger Games to anyone looking for a good book to snuggle up with.
